What are the best majors currently?

Postby donlat3 on Fri Oct 09, 2009 7:38 pm

What is there a high demand for currently in the work force? Is there a major that I should consider?

I just want some options to seriously consider. It has been hard for me to choose a major. I'm really thinking about business since I speak Japanese fluently.

Any thoughts?

I guess it depends on your country and if what you are aiming for your career.

hi.. i'm Malou of Manila, Philippines. well i think, the best majors today still depend on the demand of education in the country. I'm actually a BSE Religious Education Major and i supposed that my major is in demand today since we are running out of Values Education teachers and Religion teachers mostly in Catholic schools. i would just like to know who are BSE here and what are your majors friends? thanks...

Choosing a major based on prospective career successes is nowadays pragmatic. But for me, what I find the best basis in choosing a major is what your interests are inclined in. Though there is the possibility of a discouraging low pay at first, with hard work and strong determination I believe that any man can reach limitless paramounts. Personally, I find it ironic for someone to choose a major just because it promises a high pay not because he can excel in that major because there is where his interest lies. But then again, everyone of us has his own reasons.

Pick a marketable major. Majors that are most likely to yield an immediate job offer after college are accounting, business administration, computer science, engineering and math, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. But students can still major in liberal arts and make themselves attractive to potential employers by choosing subjects that are marketable. As an editor, I always counsel budding journalists who are majoring in something as general as "mass communications" to add a minor or a concentration in another subject -- business, health or computer skills, for instance. As the editor of a personal-finance magazine, I can attest that our most attractive job candidates are those who combine writing ability with knowledge of the subjects we cover. That applies to other fields as well. If your daughter is majoring in economics, she should take accounting. If she's studying history or government, she could learn a foreign language. An English major could take classes in technical writing. Then she'd have a better shot at landing a well-paying job to help pay back those college loans.

It can be a lot of pressure to feel like you need to pick a major you love AND a major that will make you money simultaneously ... I think having passion is recognized, so it is important to major in something that interests you and supplement that with a minor that broadens your skill set, and makes you unique! If it it doesn't happen all it once, maining in your major or minor, you can always gain more skills by taking certificate programs or seeking higher ed classes. There are affordable programs and courses online - Check out http://www.edvisors.com/degrees/certificates.php

Economics has the highest pay for recent grads.
Actuarial Studies, becoming an Actuary = $BIG$
Accounting
Engineering also a very high pay for recent grad
Business Admin/Banking
Speech Methodology

I recommend you study what you want/interests you not what will make you the most money.

Hi,
It usually depends on your interests and skills. But if we dont take under account what you are passionate about or good at, and we strictly go for the money and job security, then the majors below are the ones that you should look at. You will find some more info at CareerInfo411.com. Take a look, maybe you will find something useful.

1) Accounting
2) Finance
3) Electrical Engineering
4) Computer Science
5) Mechanical Engineering
6) Business Administration/Managment

best of luck

I agree with the others as it depends on your location..but pretty much any major that requires skill set is always going to be good. IE: healthcare, computer science, nursing, engineering, etc. Not sure on your definition of "best".....but those are the ones that will most likely be more in demand in the long run.
